Our company was founded in 1925 by Arthur E. Jones (Art), a mechanical engineer that worked for the Terry Steam Turbine Company located in Hartford, CT. Art was approached by Terry turbine to relocate from his factory sales territory in New Jersey to Upstate New York and become a manufacturer’s sales representative instead of a ‘factory man’. Art found several additional principal’s that were willing to hire his company as their representative and accepted the Terry Turbine offer.
In the coming years business would grow and Art was joined by a business partner located in Buffalo, NY to cover the western half of the Upstate NY territory. By the end of WW2 business was picking up steam and when his son Doug left the Navy he was hired on to join his father in the Syracuse office. A few years later, in 1950, Robert (Bob) Jones, Art’s youngest son, joined the company and was assigned to the Buffalo office. Some of the key principals that the company represented included Terry Steam Turbine, United Conveyor (Coal Ash Handling), Diamond Power (Boiler Sootblowers), and Ajax Flexible Coupling (Shaft to shaft couplings and vibrating conveyors).
When the 1960’s arrived The Jones Company was fortunate enough to have business from customers in Rochester, NY such as Eastman Kodak, Xerox, Polaroid, and Rochester Gas & Electric, that Doug moved to Rochester to cover that market. For over 40 years that market was an integral part of the company. Then, in the late 70’s Bruce Jones (Bob’s son) joined his father in Buffalo making Bruce the third-generation family member to be employed at The Arthur E. Jones Company.
In the late 70’s there were at least 50 coal fired powerplants in Upstate New York. Steam Turbines, ash handling, and sootblowers were the core of our business but we saw a new opening in the market, so we added more partners to represent. We began doing business with Cochrane who manufactured deaerators, ion exchangers, filtration systems, and steam processing equipment; Madden who builds superior Chemical Feed, Boiler Blowdown, and Heat Recovery systems; and Amiad, a manufacturer of Water Strainers and Filters, just to name of few.
Now in its 93rd year of business the Jones Company has moved on from turbines and coal fired boiler equipment to focus instead on water treatment equipment for powerplants and process plant applications. We continue to represent Cochrane, Madden, and Amiad but have evolved into an equipment system integrator and distributor. Our capabilities and experience give us a reason to be proud of our history, as well as our ability to change and evolve to provide high quality equipment solutions with superior customer service. As we approach 100 years of successful business and long term relationships, a fourth generation of Jones’ has joined the company, promising that we will continue to evolve and deliver quality service for years to come.
